Director and choreographer Gisèle Vienne continues her moving and exacting deconstruction of perceptual frameworks and narrative and psychological structures.

About the production

At the end of a night partying, a sister and brother find each other again. Twenty years before, when they were children, they were united by a close bond, only to be torn apart by a tragedy. Now that they are capable of understanding the collapse of the system that made this traumatic experience possible and acting on a new sensitivity and capacity for analysis, the two adults can imagine a sphere of action as well as a possible future.

With EXTRA LIFE, Gisèle Vienne pursues her exploration of systems of perception. By developing and unfolding the layers of the experience of this moment, this sensitive openness, the choreographer invents a form in which different strata of what constitutes the present experience coexist: past, present, anticipated future, construction of memory, imagination. This intense choreographic work follows a sophisticated and unique artistic language made up of the actors’ and dancers’ performances, Caterina Barbieri’s music, Adrien Michel’s sound design and Yves Godin’s lighting.

Gisèle Vienne’s reflection on perceptual hierarchies takes the form of a heterogeneous collage, created in collaboration with and performed by Katia Petrowick, Adèle Haenel and Theo Livesey. The result is a distinctive theatrical and choregraphic language in which sensory experiences make thoughts and words possible.

Audioeinführung: EXTRA LIFE

Two siblings who meet again at the end of a night of partying. A trauma that abruptly destroyed their close childhood relationship. A moment that now perhaps makes another life possible. After the great success of »L’Étang/Der Teich«, the Austrian-French choreographer Gisèle Vienne presents her new work »EXTRA LIFE« at the Ruhrtriennale 2023.

Judith Gerstenberg, Head Dramaturg at the Ruhrtriennale for Drama, Dance and Performance, met Gisèle Vienne before the world premiere of »EXTRA LIFE« on 16 August. About a universalist of the humanities and arts, about manifestations of our perception and about the one special moment when past, present and future coincide.
