Audio introductions

Aufzeichnungen aus dem Kellerloch

We conclude this year's festival edition with »Aufzeichnungen aus dem Kellerloch«. There could not be a more suitable text, as it brings together a multitude of motifs, thoughts and preoccupations from past productions of this year's Ruhrtriennale. Barbara Frey and the actress Nina Hoss approach this text, which is not only intellectually challenging, but at the same time extremely performative, in the Mischanlange of the Kokerei Zollverein in Essen. Ruhrtriennale dramaturge Judith Gerstenberg spoke with the two artists. Why Barbara Frey wanted to realize this work alone with Nina Hoss, why the latter finds the text »voluptuous« and why the Mischanlage is the ideal location for the production, you can find out in this introduction to »Aufzeichnungen aus dem Kellerloch«.

La posibilidad de la ternura / Die Möglichkeit von Zärtlichkeit

In the internationally acclaimed project »Paisajes para no colorear«, La Re-sentida placed the stories of young women from Santiago de Chile on stage in a direct, raw and powerful manner. The performance was greeted with cheers and tears at Ruhrtriennale 2021 for the performers’ suffering, anger and the power of their performances. As a consequence and extension of this work, Marco Layera and his team now want to question the construct of masculinity.

Ruhrtriennale dramaturge Aljoscha Begrich introduces the piece and talks about the origins of the project as well as the questions the performers and participants address in it.

THE VISITORS

With THE VISITORS, Constanza Macras continues the collaboration between DorkyPark and many of the young South African performers from her successful show »Hillbrowfication«. Together they dive into the strange world of slasher films and try to free themselves from the grip of the monsters through non-linear narratives and humorous associations.

Ruhrtriennale dramaturge Aljoscha Begrich places the idea of the play in the social context of South Africa and explains who the monsters from times past are, who determine the reality of people's lives as a matter of course.

MONUMENT 0.10: THE LIVING MONUMENT

With »Monument 0.10: The Living Monument« choreographer Eszter Salamon creates a monochrome world of intense colors in which time seems to stand still. The choreography, developed together with 14 performers from Carte Blanche, forms dreamlike landscapes of bodies, fabrics and objects that constantly transform and come together anew, in which past, present and future exist simultaneously.

Maja Zimmermann is dramaturgue and part of the programme team at PACT Zollverein and will introduce the piece, let us participate in Eszter Salamon's artistic practice and situate the now more than tenth part of the Monument series in the series of works of the same name.

Aus einem Totenhaus

In a Siberian prison camp, there are no heroes. Whether rich or poor, educated or uneducated, nobles or commoners – everyone is equal here, united in a horror that never ends. Fyodor Dostoyevsky experienced this personally and described it in precise detail in his Notes from the House of the Dead. These provided the material for Janáček’s final opera. Raw sounds and insistent rhythms make the harsh reality of life in the campalmost physically tangible. Star director and stage designer Dmitri Tcherniakov takes this idea even further in the vast dimensions of the Jahrhunderthalle: abolishing the division between the artists and the audience in one giant, walk-through stage installation.

Barbara Eckle, head dramaturge for music theater and concert at the Ruhrtriennale, introduces the piece in advance and talks with director and set designer Dmitri Tcherniakov.

Ruhrtriennale Podcast

Live on site at the Ruhrtriennale 2023: Music journalist Holger Noltze, Professor of Music and Media at TU Dortmund University, meets artists and participants of the Festival of the Arts in the Metropole Ruhr, talking about background, development and special features of the various productions, and also provides insights into the rehearsals on site.

Episode 3: Play Big!

Big band and symphony orchestra are like penguin and polar bear – they practically never meet. And not without reason: the improvisational freedom of jazz and the complex construction of classical compositions stand for two completely opposite approaches to music making, which composers rarely unite. And if they do?

This is the question posed by the program text of Play Big!, a concert program with compositions by Sofia Gubaidulina, Michael Wertmüller and Simon Steen-Andersen as part of the Ruhrtriennale 2023. Holger Noltze met the musical director of the evening, Titus Engel, as well as the composer Michael Wertmüller for this episode of the Ruhrtriennale Podcast and spoke with them about the experience of this encounter.
