Big band and symphony orchestra together on stage? Almost impossible. Almost! The Ruhrtriennale dares to experiment and lets the improvisational freedom of jazz and the complex construction methods of classical compositions meet. The concert program »Play Big!« combines the ghostly ironic sounds of Sofia Gubaidulina with a new composition by jazz drummer and composer Michael Wertmüller and Simon Steen-Andersen's madcap spectacle »TRIO« for choir, orchestra, big band and video – performed by the Basel Sinfonietta, the NDR Bigband and Chorwerk Ruhr under the musical direction of Titus Engel. An absolute must for every music fan!
For those who want to delve deeper, the »Play Big!« workshop is the place to be. On Friday, 22 September, we offer a free workshop for young musicians and music enthusiasts in preparation for the concert. The percussionist and soloist of the evening Lucas Niggli as well as composer Michael Wertmüller will introduce you to the secrets of the new composition »Shlimazl«. Learn first-hand from these jazz professionals, be inspired by their stories and experience live how they give some samples on the drums and impress with musical excerpts. Let's »Play Big!«
