Down Below by Leonora Carrington. It is a memoir of Carrington’s experience of her mental break down and institutionalisation in Spain in the 1940s. Carrington’s surrealism - concerned with the dissolving boundaries between ourselves and the world, people and animals, life and death - was heightened by her experience of madness. In this sense it is a useful text to unlock the world of Bählamm’s Fest.
