The Ruhrtriennale mourns the death of Peter Brötzmann, the legendary jazz saxophonist, who passed away in Wuppertal on 23 June 2023. In the 2021 festival, he opened the Maschinenhausmusik series with a brilliant concert by his trio Full Blast. It was one of the last performances of the jazz giant. Michael Wertmüller, drummer of Full Blast, had dedicated his composition Shlimazl to Peter Brötzmann, which will be premiered at the Ruhrtriennale in the concert Play Big! on 21/22 September 2023. Peter Brötzmann's death marks the end of an era in European jazz history.
